Em seu primeiro longa, David Cronenberg, o santo padroeiro deste blog, já mostrava ao mundo todo o seu poder como realizador. Partindo de um sexploitation de quinta categoria, Cronenberg consegue elevar o conceito básico, primeiro não intencionalmente com seu tradicional horror biológico (na ocasião do lançamento o mundo estava prestes a entrar em uma nova era de pânico com o surgimento da AIDS, algo que ressoa aqui pelo agente causador da epidemia de zumbis ser [um verminho] sexualmente transmissível) e, segundo, ao contrapor os mortos-vivos capitalistas de Romero com seres alegremente tesudos.
Cronenberg não pôde fugir do gore e da carnificina usual do gênero, mas ela aqui é reduzida ao seu mínimo e no lugar chama a atenção o retrato estranhamente positivo do contágio. Os moradores do condomínio de classe média alta (ambientação saída direto de um romance do J. G. Ballard), antes burgueses azedos e engessados, após a infecção, parecem passar por um processo de libertação; ao invés de sedentos de carne humana, tornam-se hiper libidinosos, alegremente sencientes e sedentos pelo próximo contato carnal. Não à toa, os último combatentes, os "heróis", são justamente os personagens mais reacionários imagináveis. O clímax - literal - longe de retratar o mundo acabando com um estrondo, termina num gemido; após uma orgia digna de Roma em plena decadência, todos os personagens saem felizes e satisfeitos prontos para levarem a revolução sexual ao resto dos subúrbios frígidos.
Se Romero usou a alegoria dos zumbis para apontar contradições inerentes das sociedades neoliberais, Cronenberg deu um passo à frente para abraçar (ou zombar) da revolução sexual que tomou o ocidente de assalto entre as décadas de 1960 e 1970. Num mundo onde as forças conservadoras novamente tomam os holofotes - e onde os zumbis estão mais banais do que nunca -, "Calafrios" é um bem-vindo antídoto.
